Carpenter Scores 12 as B-W Women's Basketball Team Falls Ohio Northern, 67-55

ADA, OHIO – Junior All-OAC forward Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/Hoover) scored 12 points but the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team falls to Ohio Northern University, 67-55, today (Saturday, January 14, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the ONU Sports Center.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets drop their record to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in the OAC while the Polar Bears improve to 13-3 overall and 7-2 in the OAC.

In addition to Carpenter for B-W, sophomore guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) and sophomore forward Natalia Simovic (Seven Hills/Normandy) each contributed 10 points.  Ohio Northern was led sophomore forward Cenzie Yoder with a game-high 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Senior forward Kara Dysert added 12 points.

Ohio Northern opened the scoring, 2-0, when Yoder connected on a jumper at 19:35.  The Yellow Jackets would quickly respond when Carpenter buried a shot at 19:17.

The Polar Bears would then go on a 9-0 run, 11-2, over the next three minutes which was capped on a jumper by junior guard Morgan Dumbaugh with 16:23 remaining.  Yoder sparked the run with four points.

B-W would cut into the lead, 11-7, on a jumper by Simovic and a three-pointer by Lairson at the 13:53 mark.

Ohio Northern built its lead to thirteen points, 22-9 at the 8:54 before the Yellow Jackets starting their comeback on a layup by Lairson. 

B-W would outscore the Polar Bears 15-8 over the remainder of the half and cut the lead to four points, 28-24, on a jumper in the paint by Simovic at the 1:20.  Ohio Northern would score the last points of the half on a jumper by Yoder with 58 seconds to secure a 30-24 lead at the intermission.

B-W opened the second half on a 5-2 run following a pair of free-throws from Lairson and a three-pointer from Carpenter to cut the score to 32-29

Ohio Northern went on a 9-2 run pushing its lead back up to 10 points, 41-31, off a Katie Mangos jumper at 12:57.

Both teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the game with the Polar Bears building its largest lead of 14 points when Sara Kocian hit a free throw at the 8:06 mark.  B-W came within six points on a three-pointer by Carpenter with 1:15 remaining.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, January 21 when they will host Pioneers of Marietta College in OAC game in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.
