MADISON, Wis. - The Edgewood College women's basketball team wanted to turn around a recent trend and open the second half strong against Rockford College. The Eagles turned to their defense, and that second half surge carried Edgewood College all the way to 58-41 victory over the Regents at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. The Eagles outscored Rockford 34-14 in the second half.

Edgewood College (6-9, 5-4 NAC), trailing by three points at halftime, held the Regents scoreless for the first 7:35 of the second half, creating a 10-0 run. The Eagles' pressure defense forced Rockford College in 0-for-13 shooting and five turnovers during that stretch. Meanwhile five different Eagles scored points.

After the Regents' Jessica Bjerning scored a basket to break the streak, Edgewood College piled on another 8-0 run behind a three-pointer from Mariah Hill and baskets by Melanie Walker and Alison Tobin to go ahead 42-29. The Regents would eventually get back to a 10-point deficit at 47-37 on three-point basket from Nicole Olson, but Allison Novitske answered with a triple of her own and the Eagles outscored the Regents 11-4 to end the game. The Eagles shot 41.9 percent in the second half.

The first half was a see-saw affair with six lead changes. Rockford College (3-12, 2-6 NAC) opened the game with an 11-2 run. On the strength of three-point baskets from Jenna Coenen, Walker and Tobin, the Eagles recovered and eventually took a 24-19 lead on a pair of Hill free throws with 3:38 left before halftime. However, Rockford scored the final eight points of the half, included the last six by Britney Curry to take a 27-24 lead into the locker room.

Tobin narrowly missed a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing nine rebounds to lead Edgewood College. Walker hit a pair of three-point baskets and dished out a team-high four assists to go with 13 points. Dareon Henderson and Coenen scored six points apiece, while Henderson swatted four Regent shots. Edgewood College commanded the paint with a 26-12 scoring advantage inside.

The Regents were led by Curry and Olson who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Dani Buttel pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds and blocked four shots. The Regents shot just 28.6 percent from the field and committed 18 turnovers.

Edgewood College now enters an important two game stretch, facing the two teams residing in first and second in the Northern Athletics Conference North Division standings. The Eagles will travel to Milwaukee next Wednesday to meet Wisconsin Lutheran College who is undefeated in conference play, and then host second place Concordia University Wisconsin the following Tuesday.
