Muskies ride Genke's double-double to fifth straight win

The Lakeland College women's basketball team won its fifth straight game on Saturday afternoon as they defeated host Rockford College, 84-75.

The Muskies (8-4, 3-3 NAC) had four players in double figures, including two off the bench to fuel their Northern Athletics Conference win.

In the first half Lakeland got off to a fast start, taking the first of two ten-point leads, 23-13, at the 12:08 mark, on an Aimee Thrune (Prairie du Sac, Wis.) 3-pointer.  The regents would get close several times, but never led, with Lakeland taking a seven-point, 40-33, lead into the break.

Junior Becky Mayo (Gladstone, Mich.) led the Muskies with 10 first half points, while sophomore Jessica Genke (Kiel, Wis.) led Lakeland with six rebounds.

As a team the Muskies shot 41.2 percent (14-for-34) from the field, 28.6 percent (4-for-14) from the 3-point line and they hit all eight of their free throws. Meanwhile, the defense held Rockford to 37 percent (10-for-27) from the field, 92.9 percent (13-for-14) from the charity stripe while not allowing a 3-pointer.

In the second half the Regents did their best to fight back, taking their only lead of the game, 48-47, seven minutes into the half. However, Lakeland would continue its solid play inside and were able to hit free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

For the game the Muskies shot 44.1 percent (30-for-68) from the field, 25 percent (5-for-20) from behind the arc and 19-for-19 from the free throw line. The Regents shot 39.3 percent (24-for-61) from the floor, 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from the 3-point line and 88 percent (22-for-25) from the charity stripe.

Genke had a huge second half, scoring 11 of her 17 points and grabbing 10 of her 16 rebounds in the half. It is her fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore Leah Eisner (Stevens Point, Wis.) added 13 points and five rebounds in her return while Mayo finished with 12 points and Thrune had 10.

The Muskies will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 12, as they host NAC North Division foe Edgewood College. Tip is 7 p.m.
