Macalester drops close contest to St. Mary's

St. Mary's scored the game's final five points to beat Macalester 65-59 Saturday afternoon at the Leonard Center.  The battle was closely contested throughout and featured 13 lead changes.  The largest lead for either team was six points.

 

The Cardinals improve to 4-7 on the season and 4-4 in the MIAC, while the Scots are now 4-7 overall, 2-6 in MIAC play.

 

Macalester was led by Maggie Wood (Sr., Oregon, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) with 13 points and Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) with 10 points to go along with four assists.  Shannon Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) also handed out four assists and Kyanna Jones (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) led the defensive effort with four steals.  Jones added eight points and five rebounds, while Rene collected three thefts.

 

The Scots led 20-12 in points off turnovers.

 

St. Mary's led 48-20 in points in the paint to overcome a 2-for-17 three-point shooting performance.  Jamie Stefely scored 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the way.

 

The Scots return to action Wednesday (Jan. 11) at St. Catherine.
