Brooklyn Women Cruise To 78-31 Win Over York

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team pushed their record to 2-0 in conference play as they steamrolled the visiting York College Cardinals on their way to a 78-31 victory. With the win, the Bulldogs improved their overall record to 7-4, while the Cardinals fell to 0-11 and 0-2 in CUNYAC play.

York played tough early, tying the game on three separate occasions, but could never grasp a lead of their own. After a Shadea Green free throw brought York back to within one point, 20-19, with 7:30 remaining in the half, Brooklyn stepped up their intensity and went on a 27-2 run to end the half and take a commanding 47-21 lead at the break.

Junior forward Tiffany Thompson capped the run with a layup with five seconds to go in the period, giving her eight points in the half, while Laurent Plagainos netted a team-high 14 points, including four of five from behind the arc.

At the break, Brooklyn tallied 17 points off turnovers, while York did not score off a turnover, and also held a 10-0 advantage in second chance points.

The Bulldogs put the game far out of reach early in the second half as they went on a 13-0 run to begin play, beginning with a Charnelle Saint Laurent three-point basket. York's Vanessa Rivera finally got her team on the board with a jumper at the 15:16 mark to sto pthe run and cut the deficit to 37, but there was not much fight left in the Cardinals, who would only muster 10 second half pionts.

"I was really happy with our defensive intensity late in the first half," said Head Coach Alex Lang. "Gracie and Melo really got us going we did a great job in extending our lead."

For Brooklyn, Plagainos led the way with 14 points, while Thompson and Saint Laurent added 12 a piece. Thompson also had a game-high 11 boards in 21 minutes, while Plagainos had a game-high seven steals. Saint Laurent had game-high honors in the assist category, notching a season-high seven.

Melissa St. Louis, who was huge in team's first half run, scored 10 points and pulled down nine boards for the Bulldogs. Ashley McCaughan had nine points off the BC bench.

Brooklyn will head to Staten Island on Saturday for a 1 pm showdown with CSI in a battle for first place in the CUNYAC South Division. Both teams are 2-0 in league play.
