Auggies improve to 6-4 with 54-39 win at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Brittany Zins (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) and Serenae Levine (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) led the Augsburg College women's basketball team to a 54-39 win over Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at the Lenord Center.

With the win, Augsburg moves to 6-4 overall (3-4 MIAC), surpassing its win total for last season (5-20 overall), while Macalester falls to 4-6 overall (2-6 MIAC).

Augsburg was led offensively by Zins and Levine, who finished with 14 points apiece. Zins has now scored in double figures in all but one game this season and tied a game-high with nine rebounds. Levine recorded a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line and added a pair of steals.

Macalester was led by Holly Schiedermayer, who finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Augsburg led the game from start to finish. The Auggies capitalized on a tough-shooting night for the Scots and stretched their lead to as many as 17 points in the second half. Despite the final score, with 8:33 to play in the game, Augsburg led by just five, at 37-32. Augsburg used a 15-5 run over a 6:42 span to stretch its lead to 15 as the Auggies went on to earn the important 54-39 MIAC victory.

For the game, Augsburg shot 39.1 percent (18-of-46), while holding the Scots to a season-low 25.0 percent (14-of-56). Macalester claimed a 39-35 advantage on the boards, but Augsburg was able to convert on 18-of-23 from the free-throw line, while the Scots were only able to convert on 9-of-12.

Augsburg and Macalester both return to action on Saturday (1/7) at 1 p.m. with key MIAC series. Augsburg will travel to St. Paul to take on MIAC-unbeaten St. Thomas, while Macalester will host St. Mary's University.
