Lady Mavs Hang on for Fifth Straight Win

More news about: Medaille

BUFFALO, NY - The Medaille College women's basketball team hosted non-conference foe Manchester College in their first action in 16 days.  The two teams showed the rust resulting from their long breaks, however, Medaille was able to outlast the Spartans (44-37) to stretch their winning streak to five games.

The Lady Mavs followed a familiar script as they jumped out to a commanding (18-4) lead just past the midway point of the first half.  However, the Spartans would score eight of the next ten points to end the half, as Medaille took a (20-12) lead into the locker room.  The teams would trade buckets to start the second half with Medaille keeping the visitors at arms length throughout much of the final 20 minutes.

The Spartans would crawl to within three points with (00:25) remaining but some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch would seal the victory for Medaille.  The Lady Mavs received another dominant performance from Tanisha Travis who notched her sixth double/double of the season with game highs in points (17) and rebounds (14) while also blocking a pair of shots.

The Lady Mavs swarming perimeter defense led to a dismal shooting performance from Manchester from behind the arc as the Spartans connected on just one of their (27) attempts from long range.  That, coupled with some timely three pointers from Joelle Pollak, enabled the Lady Mavs to come away with a gritty victory.  Pollak would finish the game with (13) points and (6) boards.

In a game in which Medaille never trailed on the scoreboard they overcame a bunch of turnovers by knocking down big shots when it seemed their opponent would challenge for the lead.  The Lady Mavs outrebounded the Spartans (45-39) but the visitors were able to pull down (22) caroms off of the offensive glass.  Of the (14) made field goal attempts, Medaille had assists on (11), as Meghan Dougherty led the way with a team high (3) helpers.

The win pushes the Lady Mavs record to (6-3) and they will head to Cleveland, Ohio on Friday (12/30) where they will face John Carroll University in another non-conference matchup.
