Late rally leads to Coe win over Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. - Coe College trailed by as much as 13 points in the first half before rallying to down Carthage 63-57 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.  The Kohawks trailed at halftime 34-25.

A jumper by Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) with 13:44 to play in the first half gave Coe a 9-7 lead.  Carthage's Dani Ripkey hit a 3-pointer less than a minute later to spark a 10-2 run by Carthage over 3:15, as they took a six-point lead.  Coe cut the lead to three with 6:47 to play on a 3-pointer by senior Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston), but Carthage responded with a 10-0 run in the next 4:32 to take a 32-19 lead.

The Kohawks trailed 40-33 with 15:30 to play when sophomore Hannah Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) hit a 3-pointer, igniting a 15-2 Coe run over the next 8:09, as Coe took a lead they would never give up.  Coe didn't make a basket in the final 1:48, but connected on five free throws in the last :33 to seal the win.

Freshman Megan Hayes (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) led Coe with a career-high 21 points.  Waskow added 13 points, while Ware finished with 12.  Breitbach added nine in the victory.  Waskow tied a career-high for the third time with 11 rebounds, while Hayes added six.  Senior Kelsey Jipp (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) and Waskow had a team-high five assists, tying a career-high for Jipp.

The Kohawks return to action on Tuesday, as they travel to Carleton for a 7 p.m. tipoff in Northfield, Minn.
