William Smith Holds Off Cortland, 78-70

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sasha Borenstein (Agoura Hills, CA) and Sydni Salvatore (Walpole, MA) scored 15 points apiece and Liz Douglass (Rutland, VT) and Erin O'Brien (Buffalo/Nardin Academy) added 14 points each as William Smith defeated Cortland, 78-70, in a non-league matchup. The Herons upped their record to 4-3 and the Red Dragons fell to 6-5 with the decision.

Cortland placed five scorers in double-figures in the setback. Senior Brittany Cohen (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) and senior Megan Maycumber (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) scored 13 points each. Senior Micki Volpini (Newfield) scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) finished with 11 points and nine rebounds and senior Molly Byrne (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) added 10 points. Cohen and senior Ally Biordi (Beacon) led the team with four assists each and Maycumber blocked three shots.

For William Smith, sophomore Jacqueline Murphy (Slingerlands/Holy Names) led the team with 11 rebounds. Jaimie Rubin (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) finished with seven assists and O'Brien added five assists. The Herons hit 12-of-28 three-pointers (43 percent), with Borenstein making 5-of-11 treys.

William Smith took a 40-38 halftime lead on a Salvatore jumper with 18 seconds left. Cortland took a 53-47 lead with 11:59 left on a Volpini jumper, but the Herons scored nine straight points on a Douglass layup, three-pointers by O'Brien and Salvatore, and an O'Brien free throw and led 56-53 with 10:14 remaining.

The guests' lead grew to 67-60 on a Borenstein three-pointer with 6:19 left and was seven again at 69-62 on a Murphy layup at the 5:04 mark. Cortland got back to within four at 72-68 on two Volpini foul shots with 2:10 left and got the ball back after a William Smith turnover.

The Red Dragons, however, missed a layup on the ensuing possession. The Herons missed a shot with 1:22 left, but Salvatore controlled the offensive rebound. With the shot clock winding down, Murphy hit a short jumper in the lane with 53 seconds left to give William Smith a six-point edge. Cortland missed a three-pointer with 44 seconds left and Rubin sank two free throws with 41 ticks left to make it a three-possession game.

Cortland will return to action on Thursday, January 5, at Clarkson University at 3 p.m.
