NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Four Pioneers were in double figures as the No. 4/6 William Paterson women's basketball team ran its season-opening win streak to 10 games with a 74-41 victory at Mount Saint Mary (9-2) Dec. 16.

 

Senior all-American forward April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) was 7-for-13 (.538) from the field for 16 points, adding a game-best 12 rebounds.  Junior guard Lindsey Callander (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) went 6-for-7 (.857) overall, making all four attempts from beyond the arc, for 16 tallies, while sophomore guard Floriana Borova (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) had 11 points, 11 boards and four assists.  Senior all-American guard BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) chipped in 10 tallies and three steals.

 

WP made 30 of its 60 (.500) field goals overall, including 9-for-19 (.474) shooting from three-point range, while limiting the Knights to a 28.8 (15-52) percent effort.  The Pioneers dominated the boards, 47-29, to out-score MSMC 17-2 on second-chance opportunities and 34-16 in the paint.

 

The Pioneers steadily built a 27-17 lead during the game's first 13 minutes before finishing the half with an 11-2 spurt for a 38-21 advantage at the break.  WP then put the game out of reach by opening the second period with a 14-2 run, making it a 52-23 contest with 14:02 to play.

 

Charneic McCullough scored 14 points to lead the Knights.  Amanda Horvers added seven tallies and seven rebounds.

 

William Paterson will face Ursinus in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament Thursday, Dec. 29, at 8:00 p.m. in York, Pa.
