With Maggie Prewitt tying a school record for assists in a game, the Centre women's basketball team pulled away from College of Mount St. Joseph in the second half to pick up an 81-67 road win Tuesday in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Prewitt, a senior guard from Mount Sterling, Ky., led all scorers with 22 points, and her 14 assists were the most for a Centre player since Leslie Baldwin in 1996. Nell Tarter and Janie Robinson also share the record.

The Colonels trailed just briefly in the game, when an Erica Miknius 3-pointer and Melanie Monahan jumper put Mount St. Joseph up 10-6 in the opening moments. Centre put together a 10-0 run on a pair of baskets by Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) and 3-pointers by Prewitt and Maggie Hartlage (Louisville, Ky.) and led the rest of the way.

Centre would lead by as many as 10 in the first half after a Mary Stough (Louisville, Ky.) layup at the 4:00 mark before taking a 38-33 lead to halftime. The Colonels went on to push the lead out to 20 by outscoring Mount St. Joseph 23-8 over the first eight minutes of the second half. With Centre in control at 61-41 at that point, the Lions would come no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Paige Baechle (Gallatin, Tenn.) scored 12 points with a team-high six rebounds for Centre while Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) followed with 11. Huter, Alyson Burke (Burgin, Ky.) and Bridget Winsted (Franklin, Tenn.) all chipped in eight points in a balanced Colonels scoring effort. Miknius led Mount St. Joseph with 14.

Centre shot 50 percent (8-of-16) from 3-point range and 56 percent (31-of-55) overall while Mount St. Joseph was 31 percent (6-of-19) from outside and 46 percent (25-of-55) overall. Centre turned the ball over 16 times to the Lions' 21, and each team grabbed 29 boards.

With the win, Centre improves to 6-1 on the year while Mount St. Joseph falls to 2-7. The Colonels host their first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference home game Friday when they take on Birmingham Southen at 6 p.m.
