Cardiac Kids Win Another Thriller at Home Over College of Wooster

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team found itself in another tightly contested game at home Wednesday night, as they defeated the Fighting Scots of Wooster 57-56 on a last second charge taken by sophomore Erica Restich.

The Gators would start off slow, hitting on just four of their first 17 shots of the game resulting in an early six point deficit. The Wooster lead would get to as much as seven with 10:09 remaining in the first half, when the Allegheny defense decided to take over.

The Gators would lock down the Fighting Scots on defense, forcing them to miss their next 14 shots of the half, while forcing 13 turnovers. Allegheny would hold Wooster scoreless until Suvi Puripattarapan hit a layup at the first half buzzer. During that same 10 minute span, the Gators would turn a seven point deficit into an eight point lead with a 15-0 run.

Allegheny would start the second half up six, but the Fighting Scots would find their scoring touch once again, cutting the Gator lead to one early. However, every time Wooster would find themselves within striking distance, Allegheny would hit a big shot to extend the lead.

Both teams would improve their shooting from the first half, Allegheny connecting on 33.3 percent from the field in the second half, compared to 31.3 in the first. The Fighting Scots would get back into the game shooting 43.8 percent in the final stanza as compared to just 25.8 in the first half.

The visitors would actually take a two point lead with just 6:24 remaining; however, Allegheny would answer with an Ann Ryan jumper to tie the game, and a Heidi Goeller layup soon after to take back the lead with just four minutes to play.

Again, the game would come down to the final minutes, as after Restich would hit a three to give Allegheny a five point lead, Wooster would fight back to within one. The game would come down to the final possession, as Wooster had the ball with a chance to win the game.

The Fighting Scots would take a time out with five seconds remaining, and with two fouls to give the Gators would foul Wooster, forcing them to inbound with just three seconds remaining.

The Fighting Scots would get it in deep to Karley Walker off the inbound, and as she looked to make her move to the basket, Restich would slide underneath and take the most important charge of her career with just two-tenths of a second remaining.

Goeller would end the game with her second straight double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 12 boards to go along with her career high six blocks. Restich and junior Daryl Ford would each score 14 points in the win; Restich chipping in with four steals, and Ford reeling in seven rebounds.

The win improves Allegheny to 5-2 on the season, and 1-0 in conference play. The Gators will be off until Saturday afternoon, when they will travel to Delaware, Ohio to take on the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan at 1:00 pm.
