Kean Women Pull Away From Rutgers-Camden, 70-41

UNION, N.J. (11/30/11) – The Kean University women's basketball team outscored Rutgers-Camden 15-3 in the final five minutes of the game in posting a 70-41 victory in New Jersey Athletic Conference South Division action on Wednesday evening.

Junior Naimah Clemons scored a game-high 24 points and added nine rebounds, six steals and four assists for the Cougars (5-1, 1-0 NJAC).  Senior forward Brittany Turner led the Scarlet Raptors (3-1, 0-1 NJAC) with 16 points.

After the Scarlet Raptors took an early 6-2 lead following back-to-back three-pointers by senior guard Kristina Cox to open the game, Kean built a 16-8 advantage on a steal and lay-up by Clemons with 11:14 remaining. 

Rutgers-Camden pulled to within 18-14 on a lay-up by freshman forward Michelle Onu, however the Cougars closed the half on a 13-3 run to take a 35-21 lead at halftime. 

The Cougars forced 24 first-half turnovers, turning those into 20 points and held a 20-6 advantage in the paint. 

Cox led all scorers with nine first-half points, while Clemons had seven points and three assists in the first half for the Cougars.

Kean scored the first four points of the second half and quickly extended the lead to 20 points at 44-24 on a lay-up by junior Simone Smith with 15:25 left in the game. 

A pair of free throws by Turner pulled Rutgers-Camden back to within 15 points at 45-30 three minutes later, however that would be as close as the Scarlet Raptors would get, as Kean extended the lead to as many as 31 points in the final minutes. 

Clemons hit 10-of-16 shots from the floor, while Smith finished with a game-high 10 rebounds and added seven points.  Senior guard Noel Mathis had eight points and game-highs of seven assists and seven steals.

Turner added seven rebounds, while Cox finished with nine points and three steals.

Kean travels to Ramapo College on Saturday, December 3, for a NJAC game at 1 p.m.
