PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Senior guard Kori Wiedt (North Olmsted/North Olmsted) had 23 points and five rebounds to lead No. 13 Mount Union to a 74-54 win at Carnegie Mellon in the final game of the DoubleTree Classic Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Wiedt, who was named tournament MVP, hit five of the Purple Raiders 10 three-pointers for the game as junior guard Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake), also selected to the all-tournament team, hit four three's as she had 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor.
Carnegie Mellon (1-1) had an 11-8 lead with 13:37 left in the first half before Mount Union went on a 16-3 run to go up 24-14 with 9:15 left in the period.
The Tartans closed the gap to three, 28-25 at the 3:02 mark before the Raiders closed the half on a 10-2 surge to lead 38-27 at the break.
Mount Union put the game away with a 12-6 burst that opened the second half and extended the margin to 19 points, 50-31.
Aside from Wiedt and LaMattina, junior center Brittany Kilgore(Northfield/Nordonia) had 10 points as Mount Union (3-0) extended its non-conference win streak to 19 games dating back to the 2008-09 season.
Emily Peel had 21 points to pace Carnegie Mellon.
Mount Union opens the home portion of its schedule Friday, Nov. 25 at 5 pm as its hosts Allegheny (Pa.) in the opening game of the M Club Shootout. Manchester (Ind.) and Wayneburg (Pa.) play in the tournament's next game at 7 pm.
