Blazers Cruise to Win in Season Opener, 78-43

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer basketball team (0-0 MIAC, 1-0 overall) sped their way to a 78-43 victory over Minnesota-Morris (0-0 UMAC, 1-1 overall) at the MIAC-UMAC Challenge in St. Joseph, Minn.

CSB used an efficient offense to propell its way to a 37-25 halftime lead. The Blazers shot 48% from the floor during the first half and made five three-pointers. The Cougars stayed in the game by forcing 11 Blazer turnovers in the first half.

Saint Benedict started hot in the second half by scoring 18 points within the first five minutes of play. The defense stepped up and foced Minnesota-Morris to shoot 14% from the floor in the second half.

Sophomore wing Brianna Barrett (Annandale, MN, Annandale) came off the bench to lead the team with 12 points and six rebounds. Junior wing Whitney Canton (Pine Island, Minn., Pine Island) chipped in 11 points, and senior point guard Cassie Dorschner (Mantorville, MN, Kasson-Mantorville) and sophomore wing Tish Alexander (Minneapolis, MN, Benilde-Saint Margaret's) each recorded three steals.

The Cougars were led by junior forward Emily Mehr, who led all players with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Blazers play the final game of the Challenge against St. Scholastica Saturday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. in St. Joseph, Minn.
