Trine Wins North Central Tip-Off Tournament

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Trine University women's basketball team had a big weekend as they won the 2011 Courtyard Chicago Naperville Tip-Off Tournament. On Friday (Nov. 18) the Thunder defeated Rockford College 53-44 and followed that up by defeating host North Central 57-49 to win the championship. The Thunder are now 3-0 to start the season.

 

Against Rockford, Trine dominated nearly the entire game. The Regents scored the first bucket of the game, but from there the Thunder took over and never looked back. Trine led by nine at the half after holding Rockford to just 17 points.

 

Senior Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) led Trine with 22 points and five steals. Junior Sydney Spragg (Reading, Mich./Reading) added in 13 points. Fellow junior Haley Killingbeck (Poneto, Ind./Southern Wells) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with eight points.

 

In the championship game, Trine would again take an early lead to start the game. The Cardinals would come back to take an 11-9 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. The Thunder would not go quietly as they quickly scored 12 unanswered points to take a 10 point lead. Trine pushed their lead to as many as 17 points midway through the second half as the Thunder defense did not allow North Central to get back into the game.

 

Spragg led the Thunder in the title game with 15 points. Killingbeck added in 12 points and four rebounds. Senf led Trine with nine boards, seven assists, and three steals. Freshman Sicily Boyce (Ashley, Ind./Prairie Heights) added in a season-high eight boards and six points. Trine shot 42.3% (22-of-52) from the field on the night.

 

For the weekend, the Thunder defense played outstanding forcing a combined 49 turnovers while making 18 steals. Senf was named tournament MVP shooting 8-for-15 from the floor and 10-for15 from the charity stripe over the two games. Senf finished the weekend scoring 29 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and adding eight steals and seven assists.

 

Spragg was also named to the All-Tournament team with a combine shooting of 10-for-23 including 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Spragg poured in 28 points while grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out five assists and making four steals.
