Strong second half lifts Scots past Oglethorpe 61-50

The Maryville College Lady Scots advanced to 1-1 on the early season with a home opening victory over Oglethorpe University by the score of 61-50 in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.

Each team shot 34% in the first half tossing in 8-of-23 shots, but MC pulled away 24-21 at the intermission by hitting 80% of their free-throw attempts.

In a back-and-forth second half, Maryville pulled away when they increased their shooting percentage to 44% and deposited 12-of13 attempts from the charity stripe.

Maryville made up for their 29 turnovers by out-rebounding the Stormy Petrels 44-19, including a 16-4 effort on the offensive glass.

Oglethorpe (1-1) was paced by Mareva Bone's 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Katie Weeks added nine points while Sarah Giles added six points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Maryville (1-1) used a strong second half push from Janell Menard. The guard finished with a team-high 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting. Lailah Farmer threw down nine points while dishing out four assists. Kiera Payne added nine points and five rebounds. Senior C.J. Dake was strong with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Scots will hit the road after Thanksgiving to participate in the Thomas More Classic in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. MC will challenge NAIA Shawnee State (OH) on Saturday before finishing the tournament with Capital (OH) on Sunday.
