Gwynedd-Mercy Outlasts Lycoming For First Win

Gwynedd Valley, PA. -- Gwynedd- Mercy defeated Lycoming, 61-53, in the GMC Tip-Off Tournament, advancing to tomorrow's championship game. The Griffins were led by an 18-point effort from senior guard Brittany Neill.

Neil and backcourt mate Jordan Dominic connected on a combined seven three pointers from behind the arc.  Dominic finished the contest with 12 points coming off four three pointers. The Griffin bench also played a huge role, helping to outscore the Warriors' reserves, 24-9, for the game.

GM shot 33.9% for the contest (20-of-59) and 14-19 from the charity stripe.  Lycoming shot 37.5% from the field (18-of-48) and 14-21 from the free throw line. The Warriors (0-1) were led in scoring by Julia Antonelli who chipped a team-high 17 points.

The Griffins were able to outrebound Lycoming 40-33 on the night. Taylour Alston collected nine rebounds while the sophomore added four points and three blocks.  Antonelli pulled down eight to lead the Warriors.

A two-point lead midway in the first half soon turned into a 25-13 edge thanks to a 40% shooting clip in the first 20 minutes. Gwynedd would take a 37-21 lead at the break. Lycoming answered the second-half bell by scoring nine-straight points and suddenly it became a seven-point contest. Neill and Dominic would drain a couple of key three-pointers later in the stanza to help reclaim a double-digit lead.

The Griffins will face Delaware Valley, who were 53-48 winners over Scranton in the evening's first game, tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the championship.  Lycoming will play the Royal at 12 p.m. in the consolation game.
