GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman forward Brenna Coll (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) scored a game-high 16 points and Delaware Valley held The University of Scranton to just 24.6 percent from the field to hand the Lady Royals a 53-48 defeat in the opening round of the GMC Tip-Off Classic at Gwyedd Mercy College on Friday evening.

The Aggies (2-0) overcame a 27-24 halftime deficit by holding Scranton (0-2) to 8-for-36 (22.2 percent) shooting in the second half. Scranton trailed, 42-33, with seven minutes remaining, but went on an 13-3 run to take a 46-45 lead on a layup by junior forward Shernai Bentley (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) with 2:25 to play.

But the Lady Royals managed just two more points on a jumper by junior guard Katherine Torto (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) with 12 seconds remaining that cut the deficit to three. A pair of Delaware Valley free throws sealed the victory with eight seconds to play.

Torto and sophomore guard Allison Sweeney (Wall, N.J./Saint Rose) led Scranton with 11 points apiece, and senior forward Sarah Gage (Ledgewood, N.J./Roxbury) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Royals.

Scranton is now 0-2 for just the second time in school history and the first time since the 1990-1991 season when it opened with a 65-62 loss to Salem State and a 62-60 loss to Colby College.

Scranton turned the ball over 23 times, leading to 17 Delaware Valley points. The Aggies pulled out the victory despite shooting just 30 percent (18-for-60) and making just 12 of 27 free throws.

The Lady Royals will have a quick turnaround as they take the court Saturday at noon against the loser of Friday's second game between Lycoming and Gwynedd Mercy.
