Pioneers Pace Their Way Past Titans

Janelle Groer, Lyndsey Seewald and Megan Turkes combined for 40 points to lead Carroll University to a 62-54 women's basketball win over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Nov. 27) in Menomonie.

The Pioneers (2-1) received 14 points apiece from Groer and Seewald, while Turkes tacked on 12 points and seven rebounds. Groer also grabbed eight rebounds for Carroll University, which turned the ball over just 10 times to the Titans' 17.

Following a 4-4 deadlock, Carroll University led for the next eight minutes. Groer sank a three-pointer before Seewald did the same to go up, 10-6. The Pioneer lead peaked at 14-8 when Turkes hit a jumper at the 11:29 mark.

UW-Oshkosh (4-2) had six different players book two points apiece as it tightened the contest. The Titans buried three consecutive jump shots, setting up Becca Diedrich's (Fr. • Two Rivers) lay-in to take an 18-16 lead with 6:34 on the clock.

A 12-2 scoring run by the Pioneers gave them a 28-20 cushion at halftime. Groer tallied a jumper and a lay-up, while Marissa Haug, Katelynn Schneider and Kelly Menden each dropped in a bucket during the closing 6:29 of the period.

Carroll University tallied 11 of 15 points to open the second stanza. Turkes accounted for six of those on two mid-range baskets and a lay-up. Groer also knocked down two shots to stretch the Pioneers' lead to 39-24 with 15:31 remaining.

UW-Oshkosh's offense came alive, piling up a 19-2 scoring run over a span of 5:17. Shelby Churchill (Sr. • Sheboygan) converted three buckets in the middle of the streak before Katie Kitzke (So. • South Milwaukee) sank a lay-up and got fouled. Kitzke's free throw with 9:07 to play put the Titans in front, 43-41.

The Pioneers pulled ahead, 51-45, when Seewald nailed a jumper and finished off a three-point play. A Michelle Boeder (Sr. • Oshkosh) triple cut UW-Oshkosh's deficit to one, but Seewald converted another jump shot as Carroll University led by two-plus points the rest of the way. Seewald sank three late free throws to close it out.

Churchill paced UW-Oshkosh with 16 points and nine rebounds, as Kitzke added nine points and Kelsey Myklebust (Jr. • Wisconsin Dells) eight. The Titans posted 40 percent overall shooting (20-50) and 1-of-6 connections from long distance, but they hit all 13 of their foul shots.
Carroll University compiled 42 percent accuracy from the field (22-53), in addition to making 2-of-7 three-pointers (29 percent) and 14-of-23 free throws (61 percent).

The Titans face the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) on Sunday (Nov. 28).
