Sattele resigns as Oglethorpe women’s basketball coach

Oglethorpe University head women's basketball coach Ron Sattele has announced his resignation as Stormy Petrel basketball coach, effective immediately. Sattele took a leave of absence in December to assist with illnesses in his family and has decided to continue to be with them in this time of need. He has served as the Oglethorpe University head coach since the 2004-05 season.

Sattele inherited a program in 2004 that had never won more than twelve games in a season and quickly turned them into national contenders.  Guided by a freshman recruiting class that would ultimately feature two All-Americans, Sattele took the Petrels to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in only his second season at the helm. It would mark the beginning of a storied four-year Tournament run that was highlighted by trips to the Final Four (2008) and Sweet 16 (2009).

During his tenure Sattele compiled a sparkling 115-64 overall record that was capped with the class of 2009 winning the school's first ever conference championship in a women's sport. The 2008-2009 squad posted the most wins (27) and fewest losses (4) in school history and captured the 2009 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship by topping Trinity University, 82-65 on March 1, 2009. Weeks later, seniors Katie Kulavic and Anna Findley, both Sattele recruits, were named Division III All-Americans for their outstanding performances. Sattele, meanwhile, was named Atlanta Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year, Women's Basketball Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year and Division III All-South Region Coach of the Year following the historic season.

"Ron has been a remarkable coach during his years of service to Oglethorpe," said Oglethorpe athletics director Jay Gardiner, adding, "His record speaks for itself. Ron will be greatly missed by all of us.  We wish him and his lovely family all of the best during these tough times."

A national search for Sattele's replacement will begin immediately.
