Wesley Falls in ECAC Tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic used a 27-8 run to close the first half and open the second half to pull out a 73-55 win over Wesley in the quarterfinals of the ECAC South Championships.

The Wolverines (16-13) trailed just 28-27 after a lay up by Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) with 4:57 left in the first half.  But Liz Briones scored eight straight Cardinal points to open a 13-5 run to end the half with Catholic (17-9) ahead 41-32. 

The Cardinals then scored 13 of the first 16 points of the second half to build a 19-point lead with 15:21 to go in the contest.

All three Wesley seniors scored in double figures in their final game.  Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) led the team with 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and four blocks.  Owens notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and had a pair of steals.  Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) matched Owens with 10 points and also dished out five assists.

Jill Woerner led all players with 17 points for the Cardinals and also blocked three shots.  Katarina Owunna added 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Briones finished with 10 points, while Kerri Confrey added 11.

Emily Grabiak scored just four points, but had seven rebounds, nine assists and four steals.

Catholic shot 48 percent in the contest, while Wesley converted only 32 percent of its field goals.

Wesley concludes the season with a 16-13 mark, the third consecutive year the Wolverines have notched at least 16 wins.
