Lanieri leads Women’s Basketball to upset over Colby-Sawyer in TCCC Quarters

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Roger Williams University Women's Basketball sophomore Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) had a career-high 29 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks to lead the #6 seed Hawks to a 73-68 upset victory at #3 seed Colby-Sawyer in The Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinals (TCCC). 

Roger Williams improves to 16-9 and advances to the TCCC semifinals at the University of New England on Thursday evening.  Colby-Sawyer, who beat the Hawks 77-59 on January 29, is now 14-11.

Lanieri had a good first half, but erupted in the second half by scoring 17 of her 29 and adding nine rebounds and six blocks as the Hawks turned a halftime deficit into the road win. TCCC Rookie of the Year Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) had 14 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) added seven points and six assists.

Colby-Sawyer sophomore Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) scored a career-high 28 points and added six assists and seven rebounds. Senior Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) contributed 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. 

Colby-Sawyer controlled the first ten minutes of the game and held their biggest lead of the half at 21-12. Roger Williams battled back over the next three minutes to tie the game at 28-28. The Chargers had an 11-4 spurt over the next five minutes to regain control at 39-32. The Hawks were able to cut the deficit to five heading into the half down 41-36. Colby-Sawyer shot 50% from the floor and was 7-10 from beyond the arc. Roger Williams stayed close by making all six free throw attempts and scoring 13 second chance points.

Roger Williams scored the first five points of the second to tie the game at 41-41. After a Carly Spagnola (Millbrook, N.Y.) three-pointer gave the visitors their first lead of the game at 44-43, the Hawks remained in front for the remainder of the game. Colby-Sawyer stayed within reach and was able to tie the game at 56-56 with five minutes to play. Lanieri scored seven of the Hawks' next nine points to put Roger Williams in front 65-58. Colby-Sawyer made a late run with a couple of three pointers, but Roger Williams was able to ice the game by making free throws. Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the second and were both below 27%.

Roger Williams made 23 of 29 free throw attempts in the game and held a 48-42 edge in rebounding. Colby-Sawyer shot 9-19 from beyond the arc, but only connected on two in the second half.
