Second Half Surge Leads Devil Women to Days Inn Final

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the 2010 Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday night. The Red Devils overcame a slow start to post a 73-58 win over Mary Baldwin College. The Red Devils will face Farmingdale State in the final at 4:00 on Sunday. Farmingdale topped The City College New York 60-32 in the other first round match up.

 

The Devils led just 28-24 at halftime but came out strong after the break and continued to build on the lead throughout the second half. The Devils broke a 42-42 tie at the 10:50 mark with an 11-2 run to take a nine-point lead. Mary Baldwin cut the lead to six once more before the Devils stretched the advantage to as many as 17 in the final minutes.

 

Senior Carole Dempsey (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) led the way with a game-high 19 points, adding nine rebounds and a game-high six steals. Sophomore Lindsey Finnery (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) added 14 points, hitting 7-of-8 free throws while junior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) added 11 points and five assists. Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) came on to score 10 points and grab eight rebounds while converting 6-of-8 free throws.

 

Ericka Brown led Mary Baldwin with 19 points while Denise Johnson added 18.

 

The Red Devils (1-0) face Farmingdale State at 4:00 on Sunday. They are home again on Tuesday, opening Centennial Conference play against Swarthmore College at 6:00 pm.
