Mount Union Women Defeat Baldwin-Wallace, 67-60, to Claim OAC Regular Season Title

ALLIANCE, OHIO –  Senior center Lauren Forquer scored a game-high 21 points as the University of Mount Union women's basketball team was defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 67-60, tonight, Wednesday, February 16, 2011) in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.  The win gave the Purple Raiders the undisputed OAC regular season title.


With its win, Mt. Union improved to 21-3 overall and 14-3 and gave the Purple Raiders a split in the season series. In addition to Forquer for Mt. Union, junior forward Amanda Rose scored 11 points. With its loss, B-W is now 17-7 overall and 12-5 in the OAC. The Yellow Jackets were led by senior 2-time All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) with 10 points.


With her 10 points tonight, Schroeder now has 1,345 career points to rank third all-time, and she needs 35 points more to surpass B-W Hall of Famer Debbie Crider for second place. Crider scored 1,379 career points.


In the first half, the Yellow Jackets and Purple Raiders traded baskets for the first five and one-half minutes for an 8-8 tie before B-W scored five straight points to take a 13-8 lead at the 12:49 mark when sophomore guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls) made a layup. Mt. Union came right back with a 5-0 run of its own and tied the game for the fifth time at 13-13 with 12:11 left when junior guard Kory Wiedt made a three-pointer.


Following a trey by B-W sophomore guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) gave the Yellow Jackets a 16-13 lead at 11:48, Mt. Union had another 5-0 run to lead for the first time at 18-16 with 9:13 when sophomore guard Tierney Allen canned a triple. Ties at 18-18 and 20-20 followed before Forquer canned her second straight jumper to give the Purple Raiders a 22-20 advantage with 7:08 left.


After Mt. Union grabbed a 24-20 lead, B-W tied the game at 24-24 with 4:36 left when freshman guard Kristen Troyer (Dover/ Garaway) canned a jumper and then grabbed the lead at 26-24 when freshman forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/ Columbian) grabbed her third offensive rebound and putback at 3:44.  The lead then grew to 27-24 with 3:09 left when freshman guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) made one of two foul shots and to 30-24 with 1:49 left when Frisina canned another trey. B-W also led 32-26 at halftime.


In the second half, B-W and Mt. Union traded a basket and a foul shot and the Yellow Jackets remained ahead at 35-29 with 16:00 left. Then the Purple Raiders went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead at 36-35 when senior guard Katie Crider made a three-pointer.  B-W came right back to take the lead at 37-36 at 13:35 when sophomore guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) made a layup and the lead grew to 39-36 when freshman center Natalia Simovic (Seven Hills/ Normandy) grabbed an offensive rebound at 13:05 and scored.


Mt. Union closed to 39-38 at the 12:18 mark when Wiedt made two foul shots following a technical foul on B-W for having six players on the floor.  The Raiders again took the lead at 40-39 with 10:11 left when senior guard Taylor Hartung made a layup. After Schroeder gave B-W a 41-40 lead, Mt. Union went on a 10-0 run to take a commanding 50-41 lead at the 5:03 mark when sophomore guard Rosa LaMattina made a three-pointer.  Schroeder ended the Raider run when she made a pair of free throws at 4:36 to close the gap to 50-43, but LaMattina countered with a pair of charity tosses of her own at 4:19 for a 52-43 lead.


Mt. Union increased its lead to 11 points at 54-43 at 3:44 when Forquer made a layup.  The closest B-W would get after that point was five points at 65-50 with 12 seconds left when sophomore guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/ Colonel Crawford) made a trey.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, February 19 when they host OAC rival Ohio Northern University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea in the second game of a women's and men's doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. The B-W and ONU men tipoff at 4:00 p.m. Fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, or via the WBWC Internet web site at www.wbwc.com.


In addition, this Saturday's B-W versus ONU doubleheader will be taped and televised by SportsTime Ohio. The women's game will air on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and the men at 8:00 p.m. The women's game also will be shown on Monday, Feb. 21 at 5:00 a.m. The men's game also will be shown on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 12:00 noon and on Monday at 7:00 a.m.
