Devils Win Overtime Thriller in Westminster, 68-64

(Westminster, Pa.) – In what has grown into one of the top rivalries in Centennial Conference women's basketball, Thursday night's match-up between Dickinson College and McDaniel provided another thrilling chapter in series. The Red Devils survived a thriller in overtime, coming away with a 68-64 road win.

 

The teams traded leads throughout the first half with the Devils gaining the largest advantage of six on two occasions. McDaniel fought back to take a two point lead at halftime, 22-20. After the break, the Green Terror stretched the lead to six with a pair of quick baskets. The Red Devils later erased a five point deficit with a 5-0 run to tie the game, 32-32 at the 11:54 mark.

 

The Red Devils built another six point lead at the 8:57 mark but McDaniel would battle back again and tie the game with a pair of free throws from Cara Thompson with just three seconds remaining in regulation.

 

The Red Devils had a pair of desperation attemptsin the final seconds but could not convert, sending the game into overtime.

 

Junior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) put the Devils in front by three with a free throw and a jump shot.  The Terror answered and pulled in front by one before Miller put the Devils back in front by four with another jumper and two more free throws with just 13 seconds remaining in the first overtime.

 

Senior Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair Academy) turned in an outstanding performance with 23 points, three steals and a game-high eight rebounds. She was perfect from the line, hitting all 13 free throw attempts. Classmate Carole Dempsey (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) added 12 points and five rebounds, hitting 4-of-4 free throws. The Red Devils shot 90 percent from the line as a team, hitting 27-of-30.

 

Sophomore Dane Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) reaached double-figures with 10 points, adding five rebounds on the night. Miller finished with nine points, a game-high four steals and a pair of assists.

 

Thompson led McDaniel (with a game-high 24 points, hitting 10-of-12 field-goals and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.

 

The Red Devils improve to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference. They travel to Johns Hopkins on Saturday to face the Blue Jays at 2:00 pm.
