Cardinals Withstand Ranger Comeback

More news about: Drew

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 11, 2010) - Catholic completed the season sweep of the Rangers this evening as they were able to hold on to a 74-61 victory. Freshman Logan Cavanaugh (Rutland, Vt./Burton and Burr Academy) recorded her first career double-double in a losing effort.

Catholic (15-8, 7-5 Landmark) looked as if they were going to repeat the blowout victory in Madison one month ago, opening the game on a 19-4 run. Drew (9-14, 2-10) who has had success in the DuFour center in the past, including last year's buzzer beater, would not go down quietly. Beginning at the 11:55 mark the Rangers would mount a comeback that would pull them within four points of the lead with 6:55 left in the first half.

One minute later, thanks to back-to-back layups by Cavanaugh and Victoria Ault (Middletown, N.J./Mater Dei), the game would be knotted for the first time since the opening tip. The Cardinal offense, that went cold for nearly five minutes, finally awoke and scored the half's next four points. Two free throws from Cavanaugh and a go-ahead layup from Ault would give the Rangers their first lead of the game with 1:02 left. The half would end with the Rangers in front, 34-33.

With the game now at almost a clean slate, the Rangers would need to build off their first half momentum. The sharp-shooting Cardinals would make it difficult for Drew in the final 20 minutes. Catholic's Jill Woerner had 15 points and was 5-8 from the floor in the second half alone. She helped spark a 10-0 run early in the half that would give Catholic breathing room down the stretch.

With just under 13 minutes to play three pointers by Danielle Barber (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) and Whitney Mackay (Suffield, Conn./Berkshire) would pull the Rangers within three. That would be the closest that Drew would come for the remainder of the contest. Catholic missed only four of their 21 free throws on the night, which helped prevent another Ranger comeback.

Cavanaugh, who has been in double figures three of the past five games, finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jess Reid (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) lead all Ranger scorers with 13 points while pulling down three rebounds.

The Rangers will travel north to take on Goucher tomorrow evening in the Decker Recreation Center. Tip-off is set for 5:30 in Towson, Md.
