DANVILLE, Va. - Shenandoah University completed a women's basketball season sweep over Averett University Sunday afternoon by downing the Cougars 81-78 in double overtime.

Junior Ashleigh Council put the Hornets (12-11, 8-8 USA South) ahead to stay by hitting one of two from the line with 1.5 seconds remaining in the second OT.

After Averett (13-11, 8-9) then threw the ball out of bounds on a fullcourt-length pass, Mandy Johnston iced it for SU with two free throws.

Council completed the victory by stealing the inbounds pass in the AU backcourt.

Shenandoah had the final possession of regulation, but senior Sierra Edwards could not connect on a baseline jumper and the game headed into extra time.

The baseline miss was about the only downside for Edwards on the day - she led all players with 27 points and on a go-ahead layup in the waning moments of regulation, she cracked the 1000-point barrier for her career.

Edwards is the 16th woman in school history to score at least 1000 career points and the first since Katherine Flint '10 last season.

Averett scored the initial four points of the first overtime and held a five-point lead with 45 seconds remaining in that five-minute session, only to see SU rally.

Crystal Williams canned a baseline 3-pointer, her third of the game, with 36 seconds left before Haley Smith tied it on a pair of free throws at the nine-second mark.

The 3-pointer remained large for the Hornets in the second OT, with Smith and Johnston each hitting one to keep SU in it.

Johnston's 'trey', with 37 seconds left, gave SU a one-point advantage. Mette Scheiman answered with one of two from the line for the Cougars, tying the game at 78 and setting up Council to score the winning point.

Holding the ball until four seconds were remaining, Council drove the lane and was fouled with 1.5 showing. She rimmed out her first before hitting on her second.

In addition to Edwards' 27, Williams and Smith had 11 and Johnston 10.

Ashley Washington paced the hosts with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Shenandoah, which moved into fifth place with today's win, completes its regular season next week with a Friday contest against Greensboro and a Saturday game versus Methodist.
