First Place Eagles Down Spartans in CAC Clash

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College women's basketball team fell to first-place Mary Washington 65-38 in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on Saturday in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 13-1 in the CAC and 18-5 overall while the Spartans are now 12-11 overall and 9-5 in the CAC.

Jenna McRae led all scorers as she tallied 13 points for the Eagles while senior Jaimie Sapp paced York with eight points.

The Eagles began the game outscoring York 18-4 over the opening 10 minutes of the contest. The Spartans got to within ten but Mary Washington eventually stretched the lead to 20 before settling for the 30-14-halftime lead.

The Spartans battled in the second half, cutting the lead to 15 early in the stanza but the Eagles steadily pulled away over the final 15 minutes of the game.

McRae shot 6-for-13 from the floor while she also converted her lone free throw attempt. McRae added five rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and two steals. Junior Katie Wimmer added 11 points, four assists, and three rebounds in her 25 minutes of work.

Sapp was 3-for-10 from the floor and 2-for-6 from the line as she led the Spartans with her eight points. Freshmen Kristen Haley and Jess Selby each added seven points for the Spartans. Haley led the Spartans with six rebounds despite being limited to 18 minutes due to foul trouble.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 27.3% from the floor, 16.7% (2-for-12) from three and 57.1% (12-for-21) from the free throw line. Mary Washington converted 47.2% of their shots from the field while they went 3-for-15 (20%) from three. The Eagles shot 66.7% (12-for-18) from the charity stripe.

The Eagles handled the Spartans on the glass, out-rebounding their guests 40-29 in the game. Mary Washington held a 20-6 advantage in points in the paint while the Eagles' reserves outscored York's bench 22-11.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they face a very hot Wesley College squad in a key conference contest. Game time in Dover, Delaware is set for 6:00 pm.
