Vasta Leads Centenary to Comfortable Victory Over PBU

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (February 8, 2011) - The Centenary College women's basketball team (12-9, 9-4 CSAC) cruised to a comfortable 90-38 win over Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Philadelphia Biblical University (2-19, 1-11 CSAC) on Tuesday evening in Folkner Family Gymnasium.

The Lady Cyclones took control right from the tip, scoring 14 of the first 16 points in the game. Centenary's smothering full court defense forced 18 first half PBU turnovers and the Lady Cyclones went on to extend their lead to 41-8 and eventually took a 50-13 lead into the halftime break. Junior Jen Vasta (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the first half.

Centenary cruised throughout the second half, extending its lead to as many as 54. The Cyclones shot over 50 percent in both halves, finishing at 52.9 by going 37-of-70 from the floor. The Lady Cyclones doubled up PBU on the boards by holding a 40-20 rebounding advantage. For the game, Centenary forced 28 turnovers which led to 37 points. The scoring attack was balanced as 12 players scored for the Lady Cyclones. Junior Hannah Ally (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg, N.J.) and sophomore Katy DeGraw (Tyler Hill, Pa./Honesdale) reached double-figures by scoring 11 and 10 points respectively. Freshman Melissa Kukoda (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds off the bench for the Cyclones. In addition to her 22 points, Vasta also tallied seven rebounds and six steals. Guard Careth Herron led Philadelphia Biblical with 11 points.

The women's basketball team not only had a victory on the floor, but also one off of it as well as the team hosted a "Day for David" this evening. The team has been working closely with Susan Heard, the mother of David, the young boy affected by Neuroblastoma (a cancer that attacks your nervous system). The Centenary women's basketball team and athletic department donated admission from tonight's game, sold t-shirts and bracelets to help raise money to the St. Baldrick's foundation. Also, members of athletic department and campus community had their head shaved after the game to show support of children fighting this disease.
