Spartans Fall in Final Non-Conference Contest of the Year

WESTMINSTER, MD – The York College women's basketball squad dropped a 56-47 non-conference decision at McDaniel College on Monday night in Westminster, MD. The Spartans fall to 11-10 overall while the Green Terror improve to 7-14.

Spartan freshman Kristen Haley led York with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year while Whitney Snoops led McDaniel with 14 points and 16 rebounds.

The game was a nip and tuck affair throughout the opening 20 minutes of play. There were five lead changes and 11 ties in the first half. York's biggest lead was two points multiple times while the Green Terror's biggest lead was four points early in the stanza.

With the score tied at 28 just 1:44 into the second half, the Green Terror went on a quick 7-0 spurt to take a 35-28 lead. The Spartans kept battling and tied the game for the 14th and final time at 41 with 6:15 left in the game.

Again, the Green Terror went on a quick spurt. This time it was an 8-0 run, as the hosts took a 49-41 advantage. The Spartans drew to within four on a four-point possession with 1:41 remaining. Freshman Brittany Hicks made a lay up and was fouled. She missed the free throw but Haley got a put-back to draw the Spartans to within four at 51-47. York would not score the rest of the way as the Green Terror got a jumper and three free throws to secure the nine-point victory.

In addition to Haley's double-double, Hicks tallied a team-high 18 points for the Spartans. Hicks was 7-for-13 from the floor, 1-for-3 from three, and 3-for-5 from the line. She also pulled in seven caroms in her 32 minutes of work. Haley was 6-for-15 from the floor and 3-for-6 from the charity stripe. She also had three blocks and a steal in her 30 minutes of play. Senior Jaimie Sapp was the other Spartan in double figures with 10 points in addition to seven rebounds. Freshman point guard Aja Wallpher was the only other Spartan to score as she recorded four points in the game.

Cara Thompson paced the Green Terror with 20 points, as she was a stellar 8-for-10 from the field including one three and a 3-for-4 performance from the free throw line. Snoops was 6-for-13 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line en route to her 14 points. She collected 15 of her 16 rebounds on the defensive end while she also had three assists and two steals.  Kim Acton was the third McDaniel player in double figures with 10 points.

The Spartans shot 34.5% from the floor for the game while they went just 1-for-13 from three. The Green and White also struggled from the charity stripe as they went just 8-for-17 for the game. McDaniel shot 38.6% from the field, 20% (1-for-5) from three and 11-for-12 (91.7%) from the free throw line.

The Spartans held a 40-37 edge in rebounding while they also held a 36-22 lead in points in the paint. York also held a 16-4 margin in second chance points.

The game concludes the Spartans' non-conference schedule as York has four regular season Capital Athletic Conference contest remaining. The Spartans start that stretch on Wednesday evening when they host Stevenson University in a 6:00 pm conference tilt at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
