Byler and Roane lead Hendrix to sixth straigh win

CONWAY, Ark. (Feb. 5) -- Hendrix College senior Christina Byler became the program's all-time leading rebounder and scored 19 points, while junior Anna Roane poured in 16 points to lead the Warriors to their sixth-straight win on Saturday afternoon, 72-69, over Trinity University at Grove Gymnasium.

Byler pulled down her 710th career rebound with 3:53 remaining in the second half to pass Jamie Ball ('05) on the Warriors' all-time list. She finished the first 20 minutes with four rebounds and pulled down back-to-back offensive boards on the same possession to take the record. Byler also ranks third on the Hendrix list and eighth on the SCAC list with 1,608 career points.

The Warriors came out with intensity and controlled the majority of the contest, eventually owning a 33-19 lead at the break. Hendrix led by at least 11 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half, until Trinity used a 12-1 run over a 2:44 span to make it a three-point contest, 52-49, with 8:14 remaining.

The Tigers tied the game on a 3-pointer with 5:23 on the clock and then grabbed a 60-58 lead, their first since scoring the game's first basket, on their next trip down the court. Senior Danielle Hubenak knocked down a pair of free throws to give Trinity its largest lead, 62-59, with 3:35 to go.

Byler responded with a clutch 3-pointer and junior Katy Ashley-Pauley stole the ball on Trinity's next possession. Senior Wyvonne Hawkins scored the go-ahead jumper 15 seconds later. Both teams went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe on their next trips down the court and the Tiger's took a one-point lead with a 3-point play the hard way from junior Abby Dietert with 1:55 remaining.

Hawkins drained another go-ahead jumper to give Hendrix the final lead change 29 seconds later and four free throws from Roane in the last 40 seconds put the Warriors on top for good.

Byler scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half on 6-of-11 shooting, including three shots from distance. Roane was 4-of-9 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Ashley-Pauley finished with nine points and recorded a career-high nine assists. Hawkins added eight points and six rebounds, while junior Samantha Devlin tallied eight points, three assists and three steals.

Dietert led the Tigers with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. Hubenak mixed in 18 points and a game-high 10 assists with four steals. Sophomore Anna Waidelich scored 13 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Hendrix improves to 12-9 overall and 9-4 in conference play, while Trinity falls to 9-12 on the year and 6-7 in SCAC action. The Warriors now own a 2.0 game lead in the SCAC West Division and can clinch the division when they host Millsaps College (7-6 SCAC) on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. CT. Hendrix will entertain University of Dallas in a mid-week affair on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
