#22 Mount Union Halts Wilmington Streak

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Amanda Rose (Uniontown/Green) had a double-double to lead Mount Union's nationally ranked women's basketball team to an 80-65 victory over Wilmington in Ohio Athletic Conference action at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex on Saturday.

Rose finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds, helping the Purple Raiders keep pace in a first-place OAC tie with Baldwin-Wallace. The result also extended Mount Union's winning streak to four games and ended a six-game run by the Quakers.

Lauren Forquer (North Canton/Green) and Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) added 12 points each for the 22nd-ranked team on both the D3Hoops.com and ESPN/USA Today polls.

With contributions from four different scorers, Mount Union sped to an 8-0 lead and led the entire way. The hosts closed the first half with another run -- a seven-point burst - to take a 39-23 advantage into the locker room.

Trailing 54-37, Wilmington made a late push to close the gap. Allie Meranda buried a pair of treys before Amy Bricker hit a 3 to finish a 19-8 Quaker stretch which saw the visitors pull within six points at 62-56.

The Raiders then gave a decisive answer, scoring the game's next seven points, including five by LaMattina. Mount Union made its final eight free throws to pull away.
 
For the Quakers (10-11, 8-6), Brianna Peters had 12 points while Bricker contributed 11 points and six assists. Olivia Waters made eight rebounds.
 
Elsewhere in the OAC, Baldwin-Wallace (16-5, 11-3) won its game at Muskingum, 75-60, while Ohio Northern (14-7, 9-5) won at Marietta, 71-49, to clinch an OAC Tournament spot and move into third place on its own. Before Saturday, ONU was knotted up with Muskingum and Wilmington.
 
Mount Union (18-3, 11-3) will be in action next on Wednesday when the Marietta women visit The MAAC at 7:30 p.m. The Pioneers (7-14, 3-11) won the previous meeting, 73-69, on Jan. 5.
