Farmington upended by Maine Maritime

FARMINGTON, Maine -- Katie Pushard (Winthrop, Maine) scored 14 of her 17 points in the opening half as Maine Maritime Academy took an 11-point lead into halftime and held on to knock off the University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action tonight .

The Beavers (7-10 overall, 4-4 NAC) are scheduled to host Bowdoin College Tuesday at 7 p.m.. The Mariners (12-6, 6-1) are slated to visit Lyndon State College Friday at 8 p.m.

Paige Saunders (Surry, Maine) scored 11 points to lead the Beavers, while Ashley Busque (Belgrade, Maine) and Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine) each added 10 points and Holly Oliver (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) chipped in seven points and eight rebounds.

Pushard knocked down four of five 3-pointers for the Mariners, who also received 17 points from Maggie Smith (Bath, Maine). Samantha Goda (Eliot, Maine), MMA's leading scorer on the season, was limited to four points, but grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Mariners shot 50 percent (17-34) in the first half, including 60 percent (6-10) from 3-point range.

After an early Farmington lead (6-5), Pushard buried two threes and Alexis Bennett (Freedom, Maine) added another as the Mariners outscored the hosts 10-2 to take a 15-8 lead with 14:33 remaining in the first half.

Five straight points from Saunders helped the Beavers whittle the lead to 31-27 with 5:40 left in the first, but the Mariners responded with a 7-1 stretch including a Pushard trey and two Stahl layups for a 38-28 cushion on their way to a 44-33 halftime command.

Farmington, which shot 55 percent (11-20) from the field in the opening half, struggled in the second at 26.7 (8-30), but the Mariners were equally as dismal at 22.2 (6-27). The Mariners struggles allowed the Beavers to chip the lead down to 54-49 on an Oliver basket with 5:39 remaining.

After an exchange of points, the Mariners used a 7-2 spurt, capped by a Smith 3-pointer from the wing, to push the lead back to 63-53 with 2:54 remaining. Farmington was held without a basket over the final 3:48 as Maine Maritime came away with a 65-53 NAC victory.
