Westminster (Pa.) Downed by Bethany After Leading at Halftime

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - After leading 22-21 at halftime, the Westminster College women's basketball team lost 56-45 at home to Bethany Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game. The Titans (4-13, 0-9 PAC) led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but Bethany (8-9, 3-6 PAC) scored first in the second half and never trailed for the remainder of the game.

Sophomore forward Katie Hughes came off the bench and led the Titans with 10 points and six rebounds. This marked Hughes' fourth straight game scoring in double figures and the seventh overall this season.

Senior guard Kaitlin McCarthy also scored nine for the Titans to go with three assists, while freshman guard Gabby Holko  bucketed six points including 2-3 shooting from 3-point range.

Kelly Zogran led the Bison with 12 points and Katelynn Hackathorn scored 11. Kayla Taormina pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go with seven points.

Westminster limited Bethany to just 33.9 percent (20-59) shooting from the floor, but the Titans shot just 32.0 percent (16-50).

Neither team scored in the opening 4:18 before the Titans eventually established a 20-10 lead. Only three Bison registered points in the first half as Hackathorn and Zogran each had nine and, for Westminster, Hughes bucketed eight of her 10 points in the first half.

Bethany started the second half on an 8-0 run to take a 29-22 lead and it never looked back. Audra Droginske nailed a 3-pointer to put Bethany up by 11 at 45-34 with 6:48 left. Bethany went up by as many as 13 points before coming away with the 11-point win.

Westminster travels to No. 23-ranked Saint Vincent Wednesday at 6 p.m. before hosting No. 2-ranked Thomas More Saturday at 2 p.m.
