Ferrum Women Outlast Shenandoah

More news about: Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University fell a point short Wednesday evening in its bid to down Ferrum College in USA South Conference women's basketball action.

Ferrum (11-4, 7-2) was a 75-74 winner over the Hornets, running its winning streak over SU to 18 games.

Shenandoah (7-8, 3-5) was seeking its first victory over FC since a 77-68 win in Ferrum on February 17, 2004.

The Panthers have now won 11 straight over SU on the Hornets home floor, and did it Wednesday largely thanks to a 20 for 25 performance from the free throw line.

Ferrum made all six of its attempts from the charity stripe in the opening half and 18 for its first 21 as it built as much as a 13-point advantage midway through the second.

SU, which found itself down 65-52 with 7:38 to play, got back in it by reeling off 11 straight points to trail by just two, 65-63, with 3:45 left.

Unfortunately for the home fans, this would be as close as the Hornets would get. Kirsten Keith ended Shenandoah's run with turnaround layup with 2:41 remaining, which started a 6-0 run for the visitors.

Shenandoah would be able to make it a one-possession contest in the final 30 seconds, but Tesla Akers and Kristen Keith each hit one of two from the line to clinch it for the Panthers.

Freshman Sara D'Amico provided the final margin with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for SU.

Senior Sierra Edwards led all scorers with 20 points while Mandy Johnson had 13 and D'Amico 10.

Edwards classmate, Crystal Williams, paced SU on the boards with 13. Shenandoah won the battle of the glass 40-33.

Akers had 19 for the victors; she was one of four FC starters scoring at least 10 points.

The Hornets take to the road this weekend to play Peace and Meredith colleges.
