NJCU WOMEN POST MOST LOPSIDED WIN SINCE 2006, ROUT CITY TECH BY 41

 

BROOKLYN, NY (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University snapped a six-game losing streak by forcing New York City College of Technology to commit 41 turnovers and defeated the Yellow Jackets by that margin—41—the largest margin of victory since 2006, as the Gothic Knights posted a 68-27 victory in an early afternoon non-conference game on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at Klitgord Gymnasium.

 

NJCU (3-12) wins by its largest margin since a 56-point win against City College of New York on December 21, 2006. City Tech is also 3-12. NJCU leads the all-time series, 6-0.

 

NJCU scored the first 13 points of the game and led 15-2 before limiting the Yellow Jackets to just 15 first half points as the Knights took a 34-15 lead into the locker room.

 

The Knights scored the first 20 points of the second half for a 54-16 advantage and the hosts did not score their first points of the period until a free throw with 11:07 remaining. It took more than nine minutes before City Tech could convert a field goal in the period. NJCU twice led by as many as 44 points.

 

For NJCU, senior guard CAROLINA GARCIA (Plainfield, NJ/Franklin) became the 11th player in school history to score at least 800 career points (803) as she led the team in scoring for the eighth time this season while scoring in double figures for the 29th time in her career. Garcia scored a game-high 14 points (5-9 FG) for her 11th double-figure scoring game of the year.

 

Sophomore guard GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) reached double digits for the third time in four games since transferring to NJCU, as she made 5-of-10 shots and finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard NIDIA CARMONA (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) delivered nine points (3-8) and collected five assists, five rebounds and three steals.

 

Also for NJCU, freshman guard VALENCIA EPPS (Newark, NJ/West Side) tallied a career-high eight points and had three steals. Freshman guard TATIANA CLARK (Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) equaled her career best with eight points (3-6 FG) and added three assists as the Knights contributed helpers on 15 of 28 total field goals.

 

In all, each of the 10 Gothic Knights who saw action scored and played between 18 and 22 minutes. NJCU shot a season high 45.9 percent as a team (28-61), despite committing 27 turnovers.

 

City Tech senior guard Erica Simon (Brooklyn, NY) had a double-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds and three steals for the host. The Yellow Jackets scored just 12 points in the second half when they shot 4-of-22 (.182). NJCU, which had a 10-0 edge on fast breaks, also received a 27-9 scoring boost from its bench.

 

NJCU looks for its first New Jersey Athletic Conference win of the season on Wednesday, January 19 when it faces Ramapo College on the road in Mahwah, NJ at 5:30 p.m.
