Saint Vincent women remain perfect in PAC

More news about: St. Vincent

The Saint Vincent women's basketball team outscored Grove City 22-5 over the final six minutes of the second half to defeat the Wolverines 64-56 to remain perfect in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

Brittany Sedlock led the way for Saint Vincent, scoring 19 points with nine rebounds, while Devin McGrath and Maria Baroffio each added 10 points apiece for the Bearcats, who posted their eighth straight victory to improve to 14-1 on the season and 7-0 in the PAC.

The Bearcats struggled out of the gates, connecting on just three of their first 16 field goal attempts, but stayed in the game thanks to strong offensive rebounding, as they grabbed eight offensive boards over the first seven minutes to force a 12-12 tie.

A pair of free throws from Caty Kumar with 9:28 left in the first half gave SVC a 16-14 lead, and it spurred an 8-2 run, as a conventional three-point play from Sedlock pushed SVC in front 21-16 with just under seven minutes left until the break.

The Bearcats then went cold, as the Sedlock basket proved to be the final field goal of the half for SVC, as Grove City would end the frame on an 11-2 run to go into halftime ahead 28-23.

Over the first half, Saint Vincent went just 8-for-37 from the floor (21 percent), and 1-for-11 from behind the three-point line.  Conversely, Grove City shot 53 percent (9-for-17) from the field and 10-for-11 from the free throw line.  Despite the high Grove City shooting percentage, the Lady Bearcat defense, and aformentioned offensive rebounding, kept the game close, as SVC forced 15 Wolverine turnovers in the first half and out-rebounded the hosts 19-14 over the first 20 minutes.

The teams shared buckets to begin the second half, before the Bearcats scored five straight points, on another Sedlock three-point play and a lay up from Savannah Hardy, to cut the Grove City lead to 45-42 with 13:40 left in regulation.

The Wolverines would bounce right back, scoring the next five points to enjoy their largest lead of the day - 50-42 - with 12:50 remaining.

Saint Vincent would then answer in a big way, cutting the gap to two, 50-48, on a Jordan Clinton bucket, before Emily Fenton went coast-to-coast for a lay up at the 9:43 mark to tie the game at 50.  Grove City scored on its next possession, but with 6:56 left to play, Kumar nailed a three-pointer to give SVC its first lead of the second half, 53-52.

Two free throws apiece from McGrath and Sedlock would increase the Bearcat lead to 57-52 with 4:19 left.  A Grove City three-pointer with 2:40 to go would cut SVC's lead to 57-55, but the Bearcats would out-score the Wolverines 7-1 over the final 1:30, going 5-for-7 from the foul line over the stretch, to seal the comeback win.  Over the final 20 minutes, the Bearcats out-scored the Wolverines 41-28, and limited the hosts to just a 10-for-26 showing from the floor.

In addition to the three double-figure scorers, Kumar scored a career-high nine points off the bench, going 3-for-4 from the field.  Melissa Mansur led the defensive charge for the Bearcats, picking up six of the team's 16 steals.

Grove City was led by reigning PAC Player of the Week and scoring leader Christine Slater, who scored 20 points to go with 11 rebounds.  Leah Gibson added 15 points for the Wolverines (7-6/3-3 PAC).

The Bearcats will return to action for their biggest game of the year on Wednesday night, as sole possession of first place in the PAC will be up for grabs when SVC hosts Thomas More College, ranked third nationally and tied for first in the conference with SVC.  Tip is scheduled for 5:30 at the Robert S. Carey Center.
