Eau Claire Knocks Off Yellowjackets

More news about: UW-Superior

On Wednesday night, the Yellowjacket women's basketball team hosted UW-Eau Claire at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.  After jumping out to an early lead, the Yellowjackets watched Eau Claire go on a big run and they weren't able to recover.  The opening minutes allowed the Blugolds to pull away and they went on to a 79-56 win.

Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn.) led the way for the Yellowjackets with 17 points, the only Yellowjacket to hit double figures in the game.  Kristen Nett (Green Bay, Wis.) was the next-highest scorer with eight points, as the Yellowjackets struggled shooting the ball, hitting just 27.8% of their shots and going 7-27 (25.9%) from three-point range.

After falling behind 2-0, the Yellowjackets went on a 9-2 run, four points coming from Davis, and the 'Jackets were up 9-4 with just over four minutes gone in the first half.  The Blugolds would answer, however, going on a 13-0 lead until Nett hit a three-pointer to stop the bleeding and make it 17-12.  The Blugolds would then go on a 16-4 run and would hit the half with a 39-22 lead.

Eau Claire would start the second half with a 9-0 run and eventually would build a 33-point lead, cruising through the half to get the win.  Eau Claire's size advantage was evident throughout, as they outscored the Yellowjackets 34-16 in the paint.

Davis also led the way with eight rebounds.  Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis.) had a team-high three assists.  Davis and Nett had one block apiece.  Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis.) had five steals.  The Yellowjacket bench enjoyed a productive night, scoring 26 points and outscoring the Eau Claire bench by eight.

Hannah Mesick had a game high 20 points for Eau Claire, including 12 in the second half.  She also had 11 rebounds and was one of three Blugolds to have a "double-double" in the game.  Ellen Plendl (12/12) and Nicole Christianson (14/10) also hit double digits in points and rebounds.  Plendl also had six blocks.
