Elmhurst Women Upended By Carthage

ELMHURST, Ill. - Poor shooting to open both the first and second halves doomed the Elmhurst College women's basketball team in a 67-53 loss to Carthage College.

Elmhurst (6-8, 1-2 CCIW) opened the first half by shooting just 1-of-15 from the floor and totaled only three points in the game's first nine minutes. Carthage (10-4, 1-2 CCIW) opened up a quick 14-3 advantage and built a 31-19 lead at the half. 

In the second half, the Bluejays managed just one field goal and only six points for the first 11 minutes allowing Carthage to open up a commanding 30-point cushion. Elmhurst started to get hot in the final six minutes of the game, outscoring Carthage 22-6 to make the final score 67-53 in favor of the Lady Reds. 

Elmhurst finished the game shooting just 27.6 percent (16-of-58) from the floor, including 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from downtown. 

Ceejay Harris came off the bench to lead Elmhurst and all scorers with 14 points, including 10 in the second half. Kelsey Monroe added 11 points for the Bluejays while Meghan Fitts chipped in with seven.

Carthage shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field, including 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from beyond the arc. The Lady Reds were led by Cailee Corcoran's 11 points and five rebounds. Allison Groessel added eight points while Michelle Wenzel, Dani Ripkey, and Taylor Tondelli scored seven points apiece for Carthage. 

Elmhurst travels to Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, January 15.
