STAUNTON, Va. -- The Captains shot 50% from the field as a team, and got an impressive 63 points off the bench as they improved to 11-1 overall, 5-0 in USA South action with an 88-47 win on the road versus Mary Baldwin College (2-9, 0-5). All 14 Captains scored at least two points in the balanced attack, led by senior Chelsie Schweers and newcomer Tiffany Davis with 13 points each.

Christopher Newport's defense came out strong in the first half, holding the Fighting Squirrels to just 18 first-half points on 7-of-33 shooting from the field. CNU built the first-half lead to 23 points at the break, 41-18, including 29 points from the reserves.

Davis, in her first game with the Captains after transferring from Division I Delaware State University, impressed right away, with seven points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal in just seven minutes of action in the first half.

In the second half, the Captains kept the foot on the gas, shooting 52.6% from the field, adding 12 of their 18 fast-break points in the second 20 minutes. Head coach Carolyn Hunter emptied the bench as Lauren Gural was the only Captain to log more than 19 minutes of action in the game. Rookie Lauren Bochonok poured in six points and hauled in six rebounds, while freshmen Tia Perry and Nicole Mitchell added nine points, seven rebounds and 10 points, seven rebounds respectively.

For the game, Schweers added her 11th straight game as the leading scorer for the Captains, with 13 points on 6-of-14 scoring. It was her season-low scoring, but came in just 19 minutes of action, as she added five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Davis matched Schweers with 13 points in 15 minutes of action, while also adding a pair of rebounds, three assists and three steals.

MBC was led by Denise Johnson, with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Iiesha Ricks and Brittany Eubanks each had eight points and six rebounds.

For the game, Mary Baldwin managed to shoot just 24.3% from the field on 17-of-70 shooting, marking the fourth straight game an opponent has failed to shoot 30% from the field. The Captains knocked down 37-of-74 shots for a 50% effort, and outrebounded the Squirrels in a 58-38 tally.

CNU will stay out on the road for another USA South contest this Wednesday, January 12 in a doubleheader with the men's teams. CNU will travel to face N.C. Wesleyan in Rocky Mount for a tip set at 5:30 pm.
