Ellwood's career night leads Blue Jays over Immaculata

More news about: Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — With depth an issue all season, the Elizabethtown women's basketball team relies on every roster player that steps onto the court. Forward Stephanie Ellwood has been nothing short of reliable. She was that —and more— Thursday evening, as she dropped a career-high 20 points in Elizabethtown's 80-59 victory over Immaculata at Thompson Gymnasium.

Ellwood did not miss a shot in the first half, connecting on six attempts (including one 3-pointer) from the floor. Her 13 points, combined with 11 from Megan Strohman and nine from Nadine Yunginger, helped the home side carry a commanding 49-30 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Ellwood's contributions ran deeper than just the scoring column on this night, though. The Orwigsburg native added six rebounds, three assists and two steals to her 30 minute evening. Ellwood's junior season has seen her score in double-figures five out of the last six games. In doing so, she's now third on the team in scoring this season with an 11.3 points per game average.

A torrid pace once again lifted the Blue Jays (7-3) to a first half advantage. The blue and white shot 51.4 percent in the opening half (19-of-37), while Immaculata (6-4) converted at just over 31 percent. While the Jays could not maintain their hot streak from the floor in the final 20 minutes, they did manage to do other things well; namely, hit their free throws. A 16-for-18 (88.9 percent) effort at the charity stripe ensured that the Mighty Macs would not challenge E-town's advantage on this night.

Strohman finished with 16, while Kaity Snyder (11) and Kendra Beittel (10) each joined Strohman and Ellwood in double figures. Snyder also collected a game-high 11 boards for her second double-double of the season —and fifth of her career. Kelly Sauerzopf added eight rebounds as E-town held a commanding 56-43 edge on the glass.

A pair of free throws by Strohman gave E-town its largest lead of the evening, 67-41, with 10:11 to play in the game. That was all a formality, however, as the Blue Jays held a double-digit lead from the 9:44 mark of the first half on.

With the victory, Elizabethtown improved to 13-5 all-time against the Mighty Macs. Chelsea McTigue led IU's charge with 13 points. Rachel Denis and Kelly Brown each chipped in with 12.

E-town will look to match its 2009-10 win total Saturday when it travels to Alvernia for a Commonwealth Conference game at 1 p.m.
