Women's Basketball Remains Undefeated at Madison Square Garden, Tops Albright College, 50-48

NEW YORK – The Cabrini women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 4-0 all-time at Madison Square Garden with a thrilling 50-48 victory on Monday night against non-conference opponent Albright College. Freshman guard Brittany Sandone netted a team-high 14 points for the Cavaliers in the win.

Sandone shot 4-for-10 overall and a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line. She also grabbed seven rebounds and swiped two steals.

Freshman forward Annie Rivituso tallied seven points and corralled six rebounds. Junior guard Laura Caron chipped in six points.

Freshman forward Colleen Stewart aided Cabrini's 45-32 rebound advantage with a club-best eight boards. Junior forward Jenn Casper recorded six rebounds in just 10 minutes played off the bench.

The Cavaliers faced a four-point deficit, 30-26, at halftime. Each team shot 33.3 percent from the floor in the opening period.

Sandone led the Cabrini effort in the first half, scoring 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting. Stewart dished three assists before the intermission.

The Cavaliers jumped out of the gates in the second half, using a 7-0 run en route to a 33-30 lead at the 16:36 mark. Cabrini staked claim to a one-point edge, 43-42, with 9:03 remaining.

Albright's sophomore guard Kari Ludy down a 3-point field goal with 2:31 on the clock, cutting the Blue & White's game-high four-point advantage to just one, 49-48.

After both teams traded empty possessions, Caron sunk 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to supply the Cavaliers with a 50-48 lead with seven ticks left.

Cabrini held on for the win after senior guard Rory Yerkes' 3-point try as time expired kicked off the back iron.

Senior guard Jessica McGinness led three scorers in double figures for the Lions with 14 points. Freshman forward Meghan Boyle coupled 12 points with 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Tonight's contest marked the fourth straight season that the Cavaliers hosted a regular season game at "The World's Most Famous Arena". Cabrini posted a 71-37 win in the first Division III women's game ever at MSG during the 2007-08 season against the College of Notre Dame.

The Cavaliers topped Neumann University, 47-40, at Madison Square Garden in 2008-09, and dropped Immaculata University, 66-52, last season.

Cabrini (3-7) continues its non-conference regular season schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at home against Alvernia University. Game time against the Crusaders is set for 6 p.m.
