#12 Mount Union Holds Off Case Western

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Mount Union's nationally-ranked women's basketball team held off Case Western Reserve for a 64-60 win on day one of the Juniata (Pa.) Holiday Classic.

Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) scored 20 points and Kori Weidt (North Olmsted/North Olmsted) put in 14. Amanda Rose compiled a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

With the score tied at 38-38 and 11:34 left in the contest, the Purple Raiders (9-1) needed a 7-point run to take command. Wiedt put Mount Union ahead with a layup while being fouled and made the ensuing layup.

Soon after, the Raiders held a 45-38 advantage. The Spartans (4-5) shrank their deficit to four points on four separate occasions, but did come any closer.

Mount Union once led by as many as 14 points when Kayla Rossman (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) buried a 3-pointer with 1:39 left in the first half, giving the Raiders a 30-16 lead.

Case Western responded with 11 consecutive points across both halves, making the score 30-27. The contest was tied twice -- at 36s and 38s -- in the final period.

Erin Hollinger led the Spartans with 14 points, 15 rebounds and five assists. Evy Iacono added 12 points and Marissa Miles contributed 10.

The Purple Raiders, who are ranked 11th by ESPN/USA Today and 12th on the D3Hoops.com poll, will be in action again on Thursday when they take on Juniata at 3 p.m. The host Eagles (7-4) lost to Wilmington (4-6) on Wednesday, 59-52.
