Nationally Ranked Williams Too Much for Rangers

DOVER, Del. (December 28, 2010) - The Rangers had their four-game winning streak snapped this evening in the first round of the Sheraton Shootout hosted by Wesley College with a 79-51 loss to #6 Williams College. The Ephs led wire-to-wire and shot a steady 49 percent from the floor for their ninth win of the season.

Drew (6-2) was victim to a 10-1 Williams run midway through the first half that put the Ephs up by 15, their largest lead of the half. The margin would stay at 15 as the Rangers would go into the locker room facing the largest halftime deficit of the season. The Rangers shot just 26 percent from the field and were 3-for-10 from beyond the arc in the first frame. Junior guard Danielle Barber (Cape May Courthouse, N.J./Middle Twp.) posed as the only scoring threat for Drew as she poured in 15 first half points, the highest first half total by a Ranger this season.

The second half of play saw much of the same, solid shooting and one big Williams run. With about 11 minutes to play the Ephs would take their 15 point lead to a 23 point lead thanks much in part to a pair of three pointers by Grace Rehnquist who finished with 14 points on the day. The Eph's defense held Barber to just one point in the final 20 minutes, as Drew continued to struggle offensively.

Besides Barber's team-high 16 points, Jen Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) was the only other Ranger in double figures, scoring 10 points while going 2-2 from the three-point line. Senior Jess Reid (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

This marked the first ever meeting between the two schools but not for coach Brittany Gaetano. As an assistant at Amherst last season, the Lord Jeffs defeated Williams in the Sweet 16 en route to the 2010 Division III Final Four.

Drew will take on host Wesley College at 2:00 in the Sheraton Shootout. Wesley was defeated by Widener College 72-70 earlier in the day.
