Late Three Hurts Oswego State In 51-50 Loss To Westminster

More news about: Oswego State

Courtney Zitt hit a three-point shot with 30 seconds remaining that proved to be the game-winning shot as the Oswego State women's basketball team fell to Westminster College 51-50 Wednesday night at the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout. Kayla Ryan paced the Laker offense with 19 points on 7-of-19 shooting, while adding five rebounds to be named to the all-tournament team.  The loss dropped Oswego State to 5-3 overall.  Westminster moved to 3-8 on the season.

The first half was a seesaw battle that featured six ties and 11 leads changes until Westminster scored five straight points late in the frame to create a cushion that became a five-point halftime lead.

The Lakers came out of the locker room strong as a layup by Wanda Sanchez, a jump shot from Ryan, and a layup by Colleen McCready put Oswego State ahead 30-29 less than three minutes into the second half.  Head coach Tracy Bruno's squad slowly built its lead to six points at 44-38 near the midway point of the half following a Ryan layup.

However, it would be that last Laker basket for over six minutes until a pair of McCready free throws gave Oswego State a slim 46-44 advantage with 4:16 to play.  From that point on, neither team held a lead over two points.  The Lakers owned a two-point lead following two more McCready free throws with 1:41 left on the clock until Zitt hit her decisive trey.  Oswego State had two more offensive possessions before time expired, but were unable to convert either opportunity.

Following Ryan's 19 points, no Laker scored more than seven points as the team registered a 24.6 shooting percentage on 17-of-69 from the field.  Westminster had a balanced offensive attack with three players scoring eight or more points as it shot 40.4 percent (19-of-47).

Oswego State returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 5 when it hosts St. Lawrence at 6 p.m. in Max Ziel Gymnasium.
