HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The #3 Captains of Christopher Newport (6-1) suffered its first regular season loss since the 2008-09 season on Sunday, falling to 10th ranked Thomas More College (8-0) in the 2010 Hoop N' Surf Classic in Hawaii.

Before the third-ranked Captains could take the floor in a battle of unbeaten top ten teams, slated to play #10 Thomas More at 9 a.m., the two teams would have to endure one of the strangest occurrences in sports - the indoor rainout. A torrential downpour in Hawaii threatened flash floods and caused a leak in the playing facility, forcing the two teams to change locations and delay game time by nearly nine hours.

When the two teams finally tipped off, it was Thomas More that would come out on top, putting CNU in the loss column for the first time since their Sweet 16 loss in the NCAA Tournament last season, and their first regular season loss since the 2008-09 finale against Greensboro (2/21/09). The Saints snapped a record 31 straight regular season wins for CNU.

CNU led early in the game, scoring the first six points, but Thomas More would answer with an 11-3 run to take the lead with 12:17 remaining in the first. The Saints would not trail again in the game, getting their first half lead up to as many as 18. Thomas Mored led at the break by 16, with a 44-28 lead.

In the second half, the Captains raced back in a ferocious attempt to catch the talented Thomas More team. Senior Chelsie Schweers would knock down 6-of-11 shots in the second half for 16 points, leading CNU back to within five of the Saints.

A pair of free-throws from Lauren Gural with 2:07 remaining made it a two-possession game at 65-60. After a layup on the other end, Schweers knocked down a mid-range jumper to pull back within five with 1:35 to go, and then again with another jump shot with 1:12 remaining after Thomas More converted a pair of free-throws. The Saints, though, would close out the win with terrific free-throw shooting, going 7-for-8 in the final 1:35.

Schweers led the way for CNU with 27 points, but struggled from long range, knocking down just three of ten attempts. The Captains as a team struggled from the field, shooting just 34.8% (23-66) including just 21.4% (3-14) from beyond the arc. Senior Barbara Davis had 12 points and 7 rebounds while Gural rounded out the Captains in double figures with 10 points.

The Saints used a balanced attack with three players in double figures to get past the Captains. Thomas More shot 49.1% from the field (26-53) and was led by Nicole Dickman with 18 and Chelsea Tolliver with 17 points.

CNU will look to quickly brush off the loss and bounce back tomorrow with a game against McMurry University. Tip is set for 4:00 pm locally, 9:00 pm Eastern.
