WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball team put together a 17-5 run midway through the first half and coasted to a 107-60 victory over Plymouth State University in Little East Conference action Saturday afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium.
Ranked 23rd nationally, Eastern shot a season-high 54.4 percent from the floor en route to improving to 8-1 overall and 2-3 in the Little East. The Panthers, now 7-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play, had won seven straight following a season-opening loss but shot just 27.3 percent from the floor and were outrebounded by 24.
Coming off its first loss of the season at No. 1-ranked Amherst College Thursday, Eastern got points and rebounds from all 12 players in uniform. Senior Jessica Moriarty (East Haven, Conn.) led Eastern with a season-high 19 points , career-high 12 rebounds and season-high eight assists and was joined in double figures by sophomore Tanisha Carter (East Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Jessica Blodgett (Nicantic, Conn.), sophomore Lauren Kelleher (Dartmouth, Mass.) and sophomore Samantha Riccio (Avon, Conn.).
Senior Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) totaled nearly one third of PSU's points, finishing with 19 and a team-high eight rebounds as the only Panther to score in double figures. Averaging a combined 30 points per game entering play, junior Alicia Doucet (Manchester, N.H./Central) and freshman Sammie Walker (Manchester, N.H./Central) combined for only eight points on 1-for-13 shooting from the floor.
Plymouth State now takes a break for final exams and the holidays. The Panthers will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 2, when they host Johnson & Wales University at Foley Gymnaisum.
