Teel And Spera Spark Western Connecticut To Win At Trinity In Women's Hoops

Hartford, Conn. – Senior center Melissa Teel (Hamden, Conn.) totaled game-highs of 18 points and 17 rebounds to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a 58-40 win over the Trinity College Bantams in women's basketball action this evening at Oosting Gymnasium.  Trinity falls to 6-3 while the Colonials, ranked No. 25 in the nation, improve to 6-1 with their fourth consecutive victory. 

Western Connecticut outrebounded Trinity, 44-27, and held the Bantams to 28.8 percent shooting from the field.  Trinity took its only lead of the game at 12-11 with 11:20 on the clock on a driving lay-up by freshman forward Shantel Hanniford (Nantucket, Mass.), but the Colonials scored the next nine points.  Trinity closes to 25-21 at the five-minute mark of the first half on a lay-up by senior tri-captain C/F Molly McGlynn (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.), before Tell scored six of her team's eight points before the break to lead the Colonials to a 33-24 advantage.  Western Connecticut extended its advantage to double digits at 37-26 on put-back by Teel just under four minutes into the second frame, and maintained it the rest of the way.

Junior guard Michelle Royals (Torrington, Conn.) paced the Bantams in scoring with 14 points, while classmate Kaitlin Ciarleglio (Waterbury, Conn.) contributed seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists.  Colonial senior guard Karli Spera (Waterford, Conn.) had 15 points and nine assists, while sophomore guard Carly Murphy (Wolcott, Conn.) added 11 points.
