Freshmen lead the way for Gallaudet women's basketball over Penn St.-Abington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team continued to add to its great start to the 2010-11 season as the Bison pulled away from Penn St.-Abington in the second half as they won the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game 81-43 on Wednesday evening at the Field House.

Gallaudet (7-0, 4-0 NEAC) outscored the Nittany Lions (1-6, 0-4 NEAC) 44-22 in the final 20 minutes of play as the Bison reached 80 points for the fifth time this season.

Freshmen guards Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) and Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) paced the Bison in the backcourt. The duo were the only Bison to reach double figures for points. Weiss scored a team best 15 points to go with four rebounds and two steals. Latham netted 13 points and four steals off the bench. The pair played 21 minutes each in the win.

GU had 11 different players record at least two points in the midweek game while an additional two saw action in the game. Sophomore guard Shaquana McDonough (Pembroke, Mass.) finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. She made a game-high five steals to boot. Senior All-American forward/center Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds but was limited to nine points, which all came in the second half. Freshman Zamica Gage (Washington, D.C.) made a game-high seven assists to go with her seven points. Senior center Nukeitra Hayes (Anderson, Ind.) chipped in seven points and six rebounds while freshman center Shawnese Taylor (Great Mills, Md.) came off the bench to record nine points and five rebounds.

Penn St.-Abington was paced by Trish Watson (17 points) and Samantha Frick (16 points) who accounted for 76 percent of the Nittany Lion offense.

The Bison will hit the road on Saturday, December 11, to face Penn St.-Harrisburg in a 1 p.m. conference game.
